Platelet rich plasma (PRP) hair treatment

Platelet rich plasma rejuvenation is a great way to support the growth and maintenance of hair. Hair loss can affect both men and women and can be highly psychologically troubling. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections can be used in combination with micro-needling at the early stage of hair thinning and follicle atrophy. This stage is marked by the presence of thin weak hairs which grow at the leading edge of the hair loss.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) has been used in many fields of medicine to repair tissues including skin grafts, joints, tendons, wounds and even as eye drops for corneal diseases. The ability of platelets to secrete growth factors and proteins can be used to support weak and dying hair follicles and to stimulate the weak hairs to re-grow into strong vibrant follicles.

PRP treatment for the hair is conducted in a similar way to PRP treatment for the skin, If the area being treated is predominantly at the front of the head (i.e. receding hair line) then a regional anaesthetic scalp injection block will be used to numb the area being treated. Once the treatment area is injected you may require an additional micro-needling procedure. We recommend repeating the treatment every 1-2 months until all hair loss is halted and maximal follicle rescue is evident.

We recommend a structured approach to hair loss management and adjunctive use of pharmacological treatment will be discussed with you during the consultation.

The overall effect achieved from platelet rich plasma for hair is dependent on the number of viable follicles present. In patients with long standing hair loss and no follicles present (baldness) PRP will not be effective, such cases require follicular hair unit transplantation. Once such patients have had a hair transplant they will require a course of scalp PRP to support the transplanted follicles.
