How to look after your skin in between facials

It’s recommended by most dermatologists and skincare experts to have a facial every four to six weeks to thoroughly cleanse your skin and get rid of any build-up of sebum and dead cells. It’s also a really good way to relax and unwind regularly as a nice way to spend your me-time. All in all, it’s like an M.O.T for your skin and wellbeing. Not only does a facial keep the skin looking younger by increasing oxygen by stimulation, this helps the skin cells regenerate. Between these four to six weeks it’s crucial to maintain your skin to keep that post-facial feeling for as long as possible. Here’s a 5 step-by-step guide on how to do this and you’ll definitely notice the benefits for your skin.

1. Establish a skincare regime:
One of the key benefits of having a facial is the top-quality skincare products used by the therapist which has been tailored to suit your skin type following your initial consultation. To get that post-facial feeling every day, it’s really good to establish your own day and night routine using the products that worked for you from the facial. Cleansing, toning and moisturising morning and night is essential.

2. Be consistent:
Once you’ve established your regime, the key is consistency! This means even when you’re tired from a night out, you must take off your make-up and continue with the regime. When your alarm goes off at 6am, the routine still needs to be in place to keep your skin happy and hydrated. Your therapist will give you all the tips you need for your unique skin and therefore sticking to the regime in between facials is vital.

3. Exfoliate your skin once a week:

Every day is not necessary as the skin needs time to renew and constant exfoliation can cause irritation. 4. Let your skin breathe:
It’s a well known sin in the beauty world to keep your makeup on overnight so always be sure to take it off before bed. Wearing makeup is fine as long as you take it off at night but it’s also beneficial to not wear makeup every day. Over the weekends, allow your skin to breathe by using a BB cream instead of foundation or nothing at all. Mineral foundations are often more kind to the skin and allow the skin to breathe more which reduces build-up of dirt in the pores which leads to blemishes and blackheads.

5. Eat well and stay hydrated:
This might seem obvious but it makes such a difference when it comes to skincare. Drinking 2-3 litres of water does absolute wonders for your complexion, especially if your skin is dehydrated. Taking in lots of vegetables and fruit is the most natural way to be kind to your skin as it reflects what you put inside your body. Avoid smoking and alcohol as it can dehydrate you and you will notice their effects on your face! Supplementing your diet with multivitamins is optional and for some people it really works for maintaining skin, hair and nails.
It’s important to remember that with different seasons and times of the month, exterior conditions as well as internal hormones are always different. You may notice at different times, your skin behaves differently, for example you could find it’s more oily or prone to break-outs sometimes. This is absolutely normal and you may need to talk to your skin therapist to understand how to maintain your regime at different times.
